Description

Burgundy is renowned for its warm hospitality and inimitable knack for enjoying life, rich in tradition, gastronomy, history, and excellent wines. Even before Julius Caesar fought his decisive battles with the Gaulles, people have been lured to this beautiful land of gently rolling landscapes, sleepy villages, rivers and canals. Burgundy is the old France, a land of culture, countryside, fine food and wine. Stately historic châteaux, miles of straight Roman roads and magnificent Romanesque churches give constant reminders of Burgundy’s heritage. The beauty of its traditional architecture will pleasantly surprise you.

Characteristics of this journey/holiday

Day by day

Day 1

Discover the treasures of Dijon such as the Church Notre Dame, the Tomb of the Dukes, who were more important than the king of France in medieval Burgundy. The influence of the Dukes of Burgundy was renowned and they were particularly close to the English throne.

Day  2  Dijon – Beaune  43 km

The rolling vineyard countryside is waiting. This is the heart of Burgundy and you will savour it. Don’t miss a visit to the wine château of Aloxe Corton, with its delightfully ornate roof, or the 12th Century Clos de Vougeot Château, which was the property of the Citeaux Abbey for several centuries.  In Nuits St Georges you will have a tasting in the world-renowned wine village that has produced wine for a thousand years.

Day  3  Beaune – Chateauneuf  35 km

In the morning you will visit this cultural wine capital, with its famous Hôtel Dieu the ancient hospice, a 15th century masterpiece of gothic art, built after the Hundred Years War. You are leaving for some of the most famous wine villages in the world, Pommard. Then you will return to Beaune before continuing to Châteauneuf. You will stay in a pleasant Chambre d’Hôtes beneath the walls of the château in a huddle of attractive 13th century houses. Historical monuments, such as the old village ‘Lavoirs’, typify this area.

Day  4  Chateauneuf – Dijon   44 km

It is possible to visit the XVth century castle before leaving the village by a lovely small street down to the Canal de Bourgogne in the Ouche Valley. You will also pass a Cistercian monastery before continuing along the waterside to arrive in Dijon by the lake Kir
