Description

The region Franche-Comté in the eastern part of France is rich of cultural and natural heritage. The beautiful city of Besançon with its famous bastille, constructed by Vauban, is even on the World Heritage Site of UNESCO. It is embedded in a river loop of the Doub river. Many small towns in the Comté region have a very rich heritage of historic treasures. But the actual reason to go on this trip is definitely the beautiful nature and the marvellous river landscapes between the Saône and the Doubs. The peaceful cycle path EuroVelo 6 is part of this cycling trip. This holiday is also a highlight for every foodie. The Franche-Comté is famous for its delicious cheese and its tasty wine.

Day by day

Day 1  Montbéliard

Arrival in Montbéliard. After check-in you have the possibility to visit the green fortified town

Day 2   Montbéliard – Villersexel   53 km

On your first day of cycling you see many beautiful fortresses and picturesque villages, such as Clerval und Cubry. You have the possibility to visit the Château de Bournel and stop-by in the beautiful village of Nans, which is impressively situated in the rock.

Day 3  Villersexel – Vesoul  36 km

 Château d’Oricourt is one of the best conserved castles in France. From here you cycle through idyllic landscape till Vesoul. It’s time to stroll through the historic city center.

Day 4  Vesoul – Gray  73 km

A beautiful ride through the river valley of the Saône river is waiting for you. Enjoy the beauty of small villages, the view over this charming river and its romantic river scenery. Arrived in Gray, a magnificent renaissance town, it’s only a short ride to reach your hotel after your visit.

Day 5  Gray – Besançon  61 km

Without doubt, today’s ride is one of the most beautiful on this trip. You are cycling through picturesque landscapes which are shaped by beautiful fortresses. Especially Marnay with its medieval centre is worth a longer stop on your way to Besançon.

Day 6  Besancon – Baume-les-Dames  41 km

Besançon is characterized by the celebrated architecture by Vauban. Today, you are cycling through the famous Doub river valley. The quadratic shape of church towers was always important in this area of the Franche Comté and are characteristic for this region. You will stay in Baumes les Dames, a beautiful town with a pleasant centre.

Day 7  Baume-les-Dames – Montbéliard  61 km

 The last day gathers again many facets and impressions of the Franche Comté region. You will pass a last wonderful day on your bike till you reach Montbéliard again.

Grade: Flat up to hilly terrain, without long and steep up-hills. Always asphalted on side roads and agricultural roads. Cycle path along the Canal de Saône and Doubs..

By plane: the nearest international airports are those of BALE and LYON.

 

By train / TGV: Arrival station: MONTBELIARD

Direct TGV connection from Paris Gare de Lyon, Luxembourg, Strasbourg and Mulhouse to Belfort-Montbéliard TGV station. Then change to Belfort-Ville. Then change for Montbéliard. Direct train connection to Montbéliard station from Belfort.
